Un inconnu s’arrête dans une station-service perdue au fin fond de la Pennsylvanie, au volant d’une Buick « Roadmaster », un magnifique modèle des années 1950… qu’il abandonne là avant de disparaître. Alertée, la police vient examiner le véhicule, qui se révèle entièrement factice et composé de matériaux inconnus.
Vingt ans plus tard, la Buick est toujours entreposée dans un hangar de la police d’État, et rien n’a filtré des phénomènes surnaturels qui se produisent à son entour, et qu’elle semble provoquer. Un homme veut cependant savoir la vérité : Ned Wilcox, le fils du policier initialement chargé de l’enquête, mort depuis dans un mystérieux accident.
Et si rouvrir les portières de la mystérieuse automobile revenait à ouvrir les portes de l’horreur ?
Après l’accident qui faillit lui coûter la vie en 1999, Stephen King a consacré trois ans à l’écriture de ce roman – l’œuvre d’un magicien de l’épouvante parvenu au sommet de son art !
