Active depuis le début des années 70, Taeko Onuki fût membre de Sugar Babe aux côtés de Tatsuro Yamashita. Ses premiers albums solo paraissent au milieu des années 70, où elle se fait connaitre pour Sunshower ou encore Mignonne. Elle a plusieurs fois joué et collaboré avec Ryuichi Sakamoto du célèbre Yellow Magic Orchestra. Ses albums solo des années 80 ont été redécouverts dans les années 2010 par les amateurs de "city pop" et son nom est désormais  rétroactivement associé à ce genre.
