This is a good introduction for people who want to be able to read and write Japanese without using roumaji.It gives a good overview of the Japanese written language, and introduces both syllabaries (hiragana and katakana) and the characters of Chinese origin (kanji).

I have scanned the book and then optimized it as best I can for the Sony Reader. Please leave me a comment, positive and/or negative, of what you think. If you have any suggestions for improvement, let me know as well.
