Synopsis: In the closing days of World War II, a severely burned man (Ralph Fiennes) with no memory of his identity is pulled from the wreckage of a plane crash in North Africa. Known only as "the English patient," he is cared for in an abandoned Italian monastery by Hana (Juliette Binoche), a grieving French-Canadian military nurse. As his physical health slowly fades, his fragmented memory gradually reawakens through the arrival of a vengeful Canadian intelligence operative named Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe) and Kip (Naveen Andrews), a Sikh bomb disposal expert. Through vivid, sweeping flashbacks, the patient reveals his true identity as Count László Almásy, a Hungarian cartographer whose passionate, ill-fated affair with Katherine Clifton (Kristin Scott Thomas)—the married wife of his expedition colleague in the pre-war Sahara desert—set off a tragic chain of geopolitical betrayals and personal devastation.
