Američko pozlaćeno doba bilo je razdoblje golemih ekonomskih promjena, golemih stečenih i izgubljenih bogatstava te porasta nejednakosti između starih i novih bogataša.

U tom kontekstu, priča počinje 1882. predstavljajući mladu Marian Brook, siroče generala Unije, koja se useljava u njujorški dom svojih potpuno staromodnih, bogatih teta Agnes van Rhijn i Ade Brook.
