The Gilded Age
Aux États-Unis, le Gilded Age désigne la période de prospérité qui suivit la guerre de Sécession. En 1882, la jeune Marian Brook quitte la Pennsylvanie après la mort de son père pour s'installer avec ses tantes aristocrates à New-York. Accompagnée par Peggy Scott, une écrivaine en devenir, Marian va découvrir la haute société et se retrouver au milieu d'un conflit entre une de ses tantes et leurs voisins, l'ambitieux magnat des chemins de fer George Russel et sa femme Bertha.

Bertha Russell bataille ferme pour se faire accepter dans la haute société new-yorkaise. De son côté, son mari George s'oppose à un syndicat virulent dans son aciérie de Pittsburgh. Marian, elle, enseigne en cachette dans une école pour filles, tandis qu'Ada fait une rencontre amoureuse, ce que sa soeur Agnès voit d'un mauvais oeil. Peggy peut laisser libre cours à son esprit militant en travaillant pour le New York Globe. Ce drame historique doit beaucoup à la qualité de ses interprètes, avec notamment des personnages féminins brillamment campés par Cynthia Nixon, Christine Baranski ou encore Carrie Coon.
