Uno dei primi ad avere come protagonista un agente segreto (l'ottimo Caine) con pregi e difetti dei comuni mortali. Sembra "di assistere a un'esibizione di Superman ancora travestito con gli abiti a buon mercato e gli occhiali di Clark Kent" (A. Walker). L'agente Palmer ritorna in Funerale a Berlino (1966) e Il cervello da un miliardo di dollari (1967).

La sceneggiatura, di Bill Canaway e James Doran, è basata sul romanzo di Len Deighton The IPCRESS File (1962). Ha ricevuto un premio BAFTA per il miglior film britannico uscito nel 1965. Nel 1999, è stato incluso al numero 59 nella lista BFI dei 100 migliori film britannici del 20 ° secolo.
