The band members were first brought together in 1965 by NBC to star in a television series about the daily life of a modern rock band, based on the Beatles' film A Hard Day's Night. The project was called The Monkees, and the leading roles were played by Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, Davy Jones, and Micky Dolenz, who were selected through a casting process. All four had experience in film and show business, with the first two being more musicians and the other two more artists. Launched in the fall of 1966, the series captivated the American audience for 18 months, and during that time, it won a couple of Emmy awards. After filming was completed, work began on the soundtrack, which involved many famous musicians and sound engineers. The band members not only performed all the lead vocals, but also played instruments themselves in some places, and Nesmith sometimes acted as a producer. Despite the overall success, Nesmith, Tork, Jones and Dolenz wanted more, and they fought hard for the right to write and play songs themselves. In the end, they managed to break Kirshner's resistance, and the album "Headquarters" became their first relatively independent work. The record's entry into the first place finally proved that beat music had a new serious and competitive group. However, "The Monkees" still had to move a little, since the Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper" topped the charts a week later. In the fall of 1967, the album "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn And Jones, Ltd" was released, which critics regarded as one of the group's best creations. This album continued with the creation of the double hit single "Pleasant Valley Sunday" / "Words". In the process of preparing the disc, the ensemble again returned the session players to the studio, and also entrusted the writing of most of the compositions to other musicians who had never been part of the group.
