Interné à l’asile psychiatrique de Charenton, le Marquis de Sade reconstruit avec les \"fous\" de l’établissement l’assassinat du révolutionnaire Marat par Charlotte Corday...

Adapté d’une pièce de Peter Weiss que Peter Brook avait mis en scène avec un énorme succès l’année précédente pour la Royal Shakespeare Company, Marat-Sade reste une oeuvre intense aux multiples significations. Un grand moment de théâtre devenu un grand moment de cinéma.

Le film vit les débuts officiels sur grand écran de l’immense actrice anglaise Glenda Jackson, qui incarne ici Charlotte Corday.

C’est le second film de Peter Brook que CSF propose, après le remarquable Sa Majesté des Mouches (Lord of the Flies).
