The sophomore offering from The Red Shore is a powerful and relentless, the perfect blend of technicality and brutality. The Avarice of Man is a concept album, based on an extreme overwhelming greed for material growth, which is the basis for the end of human kind, and the start of a new hope. Full of nihilistic, anti-government, anti-politics, and anti-organised religion themes, vocalist Chase Butler portrays his story of an entity that is created out of the repulsion of modern mankind, designed to descend upon the planet and deconstruct humanity as it is today.The entity wipes out society as we know it, so everything can start again. Chase has performed outstandingly in both his vocals and lyrics, more than stepping up to the plate. Many have complained about Chase’s vocal style on this album, compared to his last band. Two completely different genres guys, anyone who has seen The Red Shore live will know Chase has a fantastic vocal range, from highs and mids, to lows and gutturals.

Technicality again is the name when it comes to the guitar work, with essentially three guitarists (Roman Koester and Jason Leombruni, Jon Green played guitar previously for Picture the End) controlling the riffage. Unconsecrated was a huge step up from their earlier pre production work, and The Avarice of Man extends the gap again. Hats off to all three, the guitars on this album really show off their ability to punch it with bigger international bands. Also the drum work of Tim Shearman is amazing, bringing influences from a more hardcore background. Everything on this album is a leap forward from any previous work.

Personal favourites on this CD are The Seed of Annihilation, The Avarice of Man, Of First and Last Things, Armies of Damnation… Hell, I just really enjoy the whole album. In all honesty, the first time I heard The Seed of Annihilation on Triple J, it just instantly made me want to destroy everything in sight. It was like a battering of brutality straight through my ears, and I definitely concur that this is the case throughout the whole album.

Although I am a very hardcore/deathcore kinda guy (hate to genre-lize, but I have to do it here), The Red Shore have released this modern tech death CD of just ridiculously brutal and technical proportions. There is nothing about this CD that doesn’t utter brutality. I would absolutely recommend this CD to anyone who listens to metal, I even try and push it onto those who don’t.
