Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) betrapt zijn vrouw met een ander en wordt vervolgens beschuldigd van de moord op zijn vrouw en haar minnaar. Hij houdt vol dat hij onschuldig is, maar krijgt toch tweemaal levenslang in de strenge gevangenis Shawshank. Hij wordt vrienden met een zwarte gevangene (Morgan Freeman) die spullen kan regelen. Er zijn twee dingen die hem echt op de been houden: hoop en een poster van Rita Hayworth.
