Jérôme Laperrousaz (режиссер-документалист, автор культового документального фильма "Continental Circus") начиная с 1979 года работал над документальным фильмом о Бобе Марли. Но Боб Марли уехал в концертный тур. Проект отложили. И тогда с обоюдного согласия Jérôme Laperrousaz и Chris Blackwell (представитель Island Records) было решено сделать фильм о Third World!
