Description

* Thomas S. Kuhn - On the Structure of Scientific Revolutions (8 books)
THOMAS S. KUHN (1922–1996)
was an influential American philosopher and historian of science who fundamentally altered our understanding of how scientific knowledge evolves. His book THE STRUCTURE OF SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS (1962) is one of the most cited academic books of all time and introduced the concept of a "paradigm shift" , arguing that science does not progress through a linear accumulation of facts but rather through disruptive revolutionary upheavals—"paradigm shifts"—that redefine entire fields of study.
Originally trained as a physicist at Harvard University, Kuhn's first book, THE COPERNICAN REVOLUTION (1957), explored the development of heliocentric planetary astronomy during the Renaissance. Rather than treating this shift as a purely mathematical achievement, Kuhn highlighted the profound conceptual changes in cosmology, physics, and even religion that accompanied the work of Copernicus and Kepler. This historical case study laid the groundwork for his later theories on how scientific worldviews are constructed and eventually replaced.
His monumental STRUCTURE OF SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTIONS (1962) marked not only a break with several key positivist doctrines, but also inaugurated a new style of philosophy of science that brought it closer to the history of science. Kuhn argued that scientific fields undergo long periods of "normal science" where researchers operate under shared, unquestioned assumptions before encountering unexplainable anomalies that ultimately trigger a revolutionary overhaul of their entire conceptual framework. To this thesis, Kuhn added the controversial "incommensurability thesis", that theories from differing periods suffer from certain deep kinds of failure of comparability.
Kuhn continued to refine his ideas in later works. THE ESSENTIAL TENSION (1977) is a collection of selected studies that explore the traditions and changes intrinsic to scientific progression. It notably includes his thoughts on the necessary tension between tradition-bound "puzzle-solving" and the radical innovation required to bring about true scientific revolutions. In BLACK-BODY THEORY AND THE QUANTUM DISCONTINUITY, 1894–1912 (1978), he applied his framework to the birth of quantum mechanics, focusing on the historical complexities of Max Planck's work. His final major publication during his lifetime, THE ROAD SINCE STRUCTURE: PHILOSOPHICAL ESSAYS, 1970–1993 (2000), refined his mature philosophical ideas, addressed critical responses to his earlier work, and clarified his complex, evolving thesis on incommensurability. It concludes with an extensive and revealing autobiographical interview.
THE LAST WRITINGS OF THOMAS S. KUHN (2022), edited by Bojana Mladenović, presents the unfinished book manuscript Kuhn was working on at the time of his death. He sets out to develop an empirically grounded theory of meaning that would allow him to make sense of both the possibility of historical understanding and the inevitability of incommensurability between past and present science.
