Northern Spain, 1876. In the waning months of the third Carlist War, a mysterious, dark-eyed woman in a tattered cloak saves a young orphaned girl, the sole survivor of a bombing, from certain death. Convinced she is a benevolent angel, the desperate child vows everlasting devotion in exchange for salvation, unaware that there's more to the cryptic saviour than meets the eye. But all gifts demand a sacrifice. And as the weeks turn into months, which turn into years, the once-scared girl will have to learn how to endure loneliness, death, and the unbearable burden of eternal life. Can she keep up her end of their damned sanguineous bargain? Then, one long decade of solitude and blood later, the ageless girl chances upon a sympathetic father figure who takes her in. However, does the compassionate soul know that cruel fate has condemned the taciturn girl to see all the moons?
