“Vive le rock! live the rock! ”, shouts Bono, during the performance of U2's best song,“ Bad ”.
Not the usual slogan of the singer from the Irish band.

Indeed, it is, but it has a different meaning in this concert.
That U2's “iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE” tour should be documented was a matter of course. It is the best tour of U2 in 15 years, it brought them back to a more intimate dimension (the palaces), rediscovering the rock charge and, at the same time, the right measure with the spectacularization that has long been the key to their shows.

The date recorded on this DVD, however, has another story, which justifies the emphasis of those words and the many others that Bono says in this concert. The last of the Parisian shows on the tour was to air on HBO (the American channel that produced the Sopranos and that produces "Game of Thrones", so to speak). Then the Bataclan massacre and the Parisian attacks of November 2015 blew up the concerts, which were recovered on December 6 and 7. It was the return of rock to the French capital, and the return to the stage of the Eagles of Death Metal, which appear in the two final songs of the concert, and of this DVD.

"INNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE - Live In Paris", in its basic version, is no different from what was broadcast on HBO (and in Italy on Sky): a perfect and faithful documentation of a great show, which starts from the representation of a band doing rock 'n' roll, in a garage or in the bedroom, under a light bulb (on the cover represented in Andy Warhol style, as on the cover of the first Velvet Underground album). We pass through the story of childhood in Dublin ("My mother when she left me, she left me an artist", says Bono of his mother Iris, who died when he was a boy) to continue with the hyper-technological band that plays with the present and the future, interacting with a large screen placed above the audience, and interacting with the public, both physically and on social networks, through live footage on Meerkat. Then, the finale with an amazing version of "Bad", in fact, and a choral "One", before the arrival of EoDM.

If you haven't seen it, it's still worth it, but the expanded versions are much better: the one with two DVDs, with various extras (including an excerpt from the concert the night before, a "Bad / people have the power" with Patti Smith recorded December 6). It takes 120 €, but the "super deluxe edition" contains various gadgets, including a USB bulb, book, postcards.

What is unfortunate is that none of these versions include the concert in audio-only version, in CD or download - this is explained by the probable forthcoming release of the new album "Songs of experience", but it's a real shame, because the band plays really good, the versions of the songs in some cases sound even better than the originals (certainly those of the last and still beautiful "Songs of innocence").

In short, a band in a state of grace: "we're applying for the job of best rock 'n roll band in the world", U2 proclaimed years ago, when they tried to return from the semi-electronic period of the late 90s. It's hard to say if they got that job: rock has gone somewhere else, and U2, inevitably, have long since passed the climax of their production. But this tour saw them return to levels of strength they hadn't touched in years.
