Docker offre un moyen d'exécuter des processus isolés et permet également de regrouper une application avec son environnement d'exécution à l'aide de primitives telles que des fichiers Docker. Cependant, lorsqu'il s'agit d'exécuter Docker dans un environnement de production, avec des charges de travail de conteneur s'étendant sur plusieurs nœuds, vous avez besoin d'un COE (Container Orchestration Engine). Les COE proposent le clustering et convertissent vos nœuds en un seul super ordinateur, prennent des décisions intelligentes quant à l'endroit où planifier les conteneurs, connectent les conteneurs exécutés sur différents nœuds en configurant un réseau multi-hôtes et offrent de nombreuses autres fonctionnalités intéressantes telles que la tolérance aux pannes, les déploiements sans temps d'arrêt, etc. .

Kubernetes est la référence dans le monde de l'orchestration de conteneurs. Il a été créé à l'origine par Google, sur la base de son expérience en matière de création et de gestion de conteneurs à grande échelle (à l'échelle Google). Cependant, il est désormais piloté par la Cloud Native Compute Foundation (NCCF), un organisme ouvert, qui propose également la certification officielle, à savoir « Kubernetes Certified Administrator ».
