Een op hol geslagen 800 meter lange goederentrein met aan boord brandbare vloeistoffen en giftige chemicaliën raast op een grote stad af. Het spoorwegbedrijf werkt koortsachtig samen met het personeel en ingenieurs om de trein te stoppen. Een ingenieur (Denzel Washington) en een conducteur (Chris Pine) besluiten de trein na te jagen in een aparte locomotief voordat deze ontspoort in een bocht en de giftige lading de complete stad zal verwoesten.

A hollow beaten 800 meters long freight on board with flammable liquid and toxic chemicals on a large sweeping city. The railway is working feverishly with the staff and engineers to stop the train. An engineer (Denzel Washington) and a guard (Chris Pine) decide to pursue the train in a separate locomotive before it derails on a curve and the toxic cargo will destroy the entire city.
