Доп. информация: Вниманию добряков - очередные мастера прогрессива: американские проггеры Upsilon Acrux. К сожалению, они мало представлены на трэкере, но можете мне верить - играть они умеют как никто. В этой раздаче лежит их концерт 29 отября 2009 года в Лос-Анджелесе, в клубе с сакраментальным названием "Вонь" ("The Smell") :).

Хехе, чем дальше в лес, тем меньшего размера сцена предоставляется прог-группам Пятеро музыкантов еле влезли на крохотный пятачок, практически полностью закрыв ударника, а гитарист Paul Lai просто не поместился, и пришлось ему стать боком к зрителям. Жаль, что ударника было плохо видно - он был самым выразительным на сцене на фоне железного спокойствия остальных. Кстати, этот диск издала компания его отца, Дона Мешлера. Только так и попадают в наши руки диски подобных редких групп...

Диск издан простенько - в виде обычного CD-Audio jewel case, мастеринг хреновый, в корневом меню есть только одна кнопка Play, да и ту ещё разглядеть надо - белую на белом фоне.. Снято двумя камерами. На буклете присутствует статья о том, как Дон Мешлер организовывал эту съёмку, с перечислением кучи ничего нам не говорящих имён, совершенно бестолковая. Переводить её я не стал - кому интересно, найдёте под спойлером. Диск явно сделан для своей тусовки крохотным тиражом, так что будем радоваться, что имеем хотя бы такой вариант помотреть вживую на этих великолепных музыкантов.

А они того стоят!
Рекомендуется всем любителям авант-прога. Прочим будет скучновато, sorry...

Like all labors of love, the process of making this recording has resonated between the joys and frustrations of dealing with the well intentioned but proudly and defiantly independent individuals that comprise a functioning band. Scars and all, the results reflect a sincere attempt to accurately capture an Upsilon Acrux performance.

The recording specifically memorializes a single Upsilon show, performed on Thursday October 29th 2009 at The Smell in Los Angeles, California. There are no breaks, overdubs, or edits of any kind, this is the show as it was played in its entirety, blemishes and all. Thanks to all in attendance, without you there was no show.

Due to my "genetic" interest in Upsilon, I will refrain from proclaiming just how great this band can be, or whether this is the greatest recording ever produced or simply one of the greatest. You should, of course, draw your own conclusions, but negative opinions surely reflect only a deficiency in musical taste.

Living in the eastern U.S., I do not have the opportunity to see Upsilon as often as I'd like. Nevertheless, I've caught a dozen or so shows between 2007 and 2009, almost all of which I bootlegged using a 24/96 handheld digital recorder. What I find most distinctive about Upsilon shows is a band that offers a substantially different, "grittier," dimension than generally comes across in Upsilon studio recordings. This is not to critique the studio efforts in any way as each offers a representation of Upsilon that is as valid as a live performance, but rather an acknowledgement that a live Upsilon show is something different. Unfortunately, while some of my bootlegs are quite passable (to me anyway), they arc not up to commercial (or Upsilon) standards. As a result, I'd been pressuring Upsilon for some time to let me make a "real" live recording to capture the live vibe" for posterity. During the final stages of their 2009 U.S. tour, the band gave the okay — possibly with the dual interest of actually pursuing the project and simultaneously humoring me — either way, it was on.

1 first met Pete Lyman of Infrasonic Sound in 2008 when Upsilon was recording Radian Futura, their sixth studio album. When I contacted him to see if he would be interested in engineering a live Upsilon recording, he readily agreed. Pete came through with a massive "portable" board (essentially a studio board transported to the show in a van) and (quite literally) a ton of associated equipment, through which he, his partner Jeff Ehrcnberg, and their assistant Juan Franco artfully captured this recording. Although Pete endured a torturous twelve hour period immediately following the show, during which he was convinced that the audio files were lost in a post-show system crash — the results are testament to his skills. In addition to the raw recording, all engineering and mastering for this release was performed with virtuosity by Pete at Infrasonic. On top of it all, he's a great guy to boot. I strongly recommend Pete and Infrasonic to anyone wanting top shelf audio service.

After discussions with Pete and the band, I contacted Jim Smith of The Smell in Los Angeles to see if he'd be interested in hosting the show. Like Pete, Jim readily accepted and I can't think of a better place to have done the recording. If you are an independent music fan from Los Angeles, you will undoubtedly be familiar with The Smell already, but for folks not so attuned, let me say that Jim and The Smell have been around for a decade or so and have built a well deserved reputation for supporting, promoting, and nurturing the independent music scene. Anything I say will not do justice to the sweat and devotion that Jim has poured into both his venue and the scene, but the thousands of artists that have played and continue to play there are testament enough. On almost every night, Jim has a mix of local, national, or international touring bands performing at a venue where barriers between performer and audience do not exist. If you require a fine wine and sycophants to validate your existence, The Smell is not for you, but if you want to spend some time watching a band (or four) pouring themselves into their art then I strongly encourage anyone in the Los Angeles area to

check it out. The Smell is where art starts. Jim, my sincere thanks for your hospitality and I hope you are pleased with the results of the show.

The final component of the release, the video, was recorded and mixed by a great group of guys assembled by Daniel Haworth. I know Daniel

as the bass player for the (currently defunct) Los Angeles band Bad Dudes, but his day job on "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!" provided access to a top notch video team for the Upsilon show. Benjamin Berman and Daniel Gray Longino manned the cameras at the show, while Bad Dude Daniel performed all the video production work. I can't thank these guys enough. We screwed up the lighting a bit, but shit happens during a seat-of-the-pants effort supported by a shoestring budget. And, with regard to the Bad Dudes, I suspect many Upsilon fans already know of the ridiculous number of interconnections between Upsilon and the Dudes (with at least three current and two former members of Upsilon having been in Bad Dudes at various times), but if you aren't familiar with the Bad Dudes work, I would strongly encourage you to check it out. Get back in the game Gerchik!

Three other LA bands performed at the show. Superbas (Timothy Waldner, Tom Pinkava, and Steve Cvar), playing only their second show, opened the evening and did a great job. Thanks guys. These People Here followed Superbas and were excellent as well — thanks Rian (Turner) and Jeny (Nicholson), it was a pure pleasure.

Grandpire preceded Upsilon and ripped things up. Keep rocking Noah (Guevara), Dylan (Fujioka), and Nick (Lejejs). Thanks to all three bands for making the show special. I sincerely wish you all the best.

One of the pure pleasures of setting up thisshow was trying to coax Nels Cline into being on the bill. Nels, it didn't work out, but you are a true gentleman. There was no rational reason for you to even entertain my inquiries. In an era when some musicians can make you almost understand why promoters tend to forget who the artist is, trading messages with you was nothing but enjoyable. Maybe next time. In the interim, I wish you continued success. Thanks for keeping it all in perspective and for your continuing support of the independent music scene in Los Angeles.

Thanks also to the Vegan Goodies Catering Company for supporting the show with some damn fine food. Stephanie, I hope you made a buck or two. I really appreciate you and your associates taking the time to cook for the heathens on a Thursday night and truly hope your business becomes a smashing success.

For those who may not be fanatically familiar with Upsilon, the band has been around for eleven years or so. The current lineup, and the lineup for this recording, consists of Phil Cobb, Paul Lai, Chris Meszler, David Moeggenberg, and Marty Sataman. While this is the first live release of the band, Upsilon has previously released six full-length studio recordings in six different personnel configurations. All of those recordings and configurations have led Upsilon to where they arc today, so I would be remiss if I didn't also extend thanks to Upsilon alumni Jesse Appclhans, Derek Bruns, Eric Kiersnowski, Nick Lejejs, Braden "Sergeant Sexy* Miller, Cameron Presley, Josh Quon, and Muir Tennerstet — some of you I've met, most of you not, but I wish you all success. Your contributions to Upsilon arc not forgotten.

A professional thanks to Steve and Joyce at Cuneiform Records for allowing me to produce and release this recording without complaint. You graciously did not add to the hassle and for that you have my eternal gratitude. Anyone not familiar with Cuneiform should be. These folks have released the last two Upsilon studio albums as well as uncounted others from an impressive lineup of artists. Check them out, you won't be disappointed. Finally, thanks to all Upsilon fans. I hope you'll find this recording to be a valuable archive of a live Upsilon show. It's all of you that keep bands like Upsilon doing what they do. Packing five guys and a ridiculous amount of equipment into a van for a self-financed "sardine can" drive around the country is a mostly thankless undertaking. But be assured that when a band meets folks like four guys from Rhode Island who travel a couple hundred miles to New York City to attend a show they aren't even old enough to get into, they know exactly why they do it. It's all worth it at show time. You guys are the best. Hopefully this provides a little Upsilon fix between shows.
