Toute petite, Olivia Prior a été déposée sur les marches de l'orphelinat où elle vit désormais. Incapable de parler, elle n'en sait pas moins se faire respecter des autres pensionnaires. De sa mère, il ne lui reste plus qu'un journal intime relié de cuir, plein de dessins étranges et marqué par la folie, dont les derniers mots sont : " Tu seras à l'abri tant que tu ne t'approcheras pas de Gallant. "

Mais la jeune fille ne rêve que d'une chose : avoir, un jour, une famille. Alors, quand elle apprend que son oncle l'a enfin retrouvée et l'invite à venir vivre dans le domaine familial de Gallant, Olivia n'hésite pas une seule seconde. Sur place, elle ne trouve que deux domestiques et un cousin, Matthew – qui, de toute évidence, ne veut pas d'elle. Elle découvre surtout que son oncle est mort et enterré depuis plusieurs mois déjà... Elle remarque enfin que tous les habitants du manoir semblent éviter comme la peste le mur qui s'élève derrière la propriété, au milieu d'une nature luxuriante. Quel mal se dresse là, au fond de ce jardin niché au bout du monde ? Qu'est-il vraiment arrivé à la mère d'Olivia, toutes ces années plus tôt ?

Après avoir scénarisé et co-produit pour Netflix la série First Kill, inspirée d'une de ses nouvelles, l'autrice prodige V. E. Schwab met sa plume fascinante et son talent inimitable de l'intrigue au service d'un conte gothique à la fois glaçant et suprêmement émouvant. Les lecteurs de Neil Gaiman se plongeront avec délices dans cet ouvrage tissé d'ombre et de mystères, le nouveau petit miracle de l'autrice de La Vie invisible d'Addie Larue.
