"I love the concept of the man-machine writing process, but one thing I
realized while making this record is that there's a spirituality in human
collaboration. As much as I enjoy working in the studio alone, having another
input helps bring out new ideas... Speaking in terms of lateral thinking, it
helped burn a few new neural pathways." - Q

Uberzone is the brainchild of southern California native Q (named after the
"gizmo" -loving James Bond character). Like his namesake, Q is a die-hard
collector of all things electronic, and has been collecting electronic-music
gear since his early teens.

His early singles, "Botz" and "The Freaks", released on taste-maker indie dance
label City of Angels, were critically acclaimed club tracks that established Q
as one of the leading American producers of breakbeat music. These singles were
charted consistently by DJs like Florida's DJ Icey and the UK's Adam Freeland,
among others. His remixes of Sarah McLachlan, The Crystal Method and BT also
established him as one of the biggest names in the American dance scene. Spin
Magazine named Uberzone as one of the six producers to create "the biggest
beats ever."

Q does have Faith in the Future. "Sometime during my life I turned from a
pessimist into an optimist. Faith in the Future ties into technology,
electronic music and my lasting desire to live in the Jetson Age." Perhaps
that's why Uberzone's debut album, "Faith in the Future" has a feeling to it
unlike any other electronic album. It recalls influences from quirky
sci-fantasy film soundtracks to "Planet Rock" to dream-pop to the energetic,
future breaks that Uberzone has created in ways no one else can approach.

Uberzone (aka Q) takes up the challenge and mixes this new installment of
the ever-popular Y4K series. His dynamic and eclectic style, make this edition
a breakbeat goodie bag not to be missed!

As one of the leading American breaks DJ/producers since the mid-90's, Uberzone
singles such as "Botz" and the Space Cadet EP have been called classics by the
likes of UK breaks connoisseurs Rennie Pilgrem and Tayo and Q's following among
the breaks fraternity is nothing but rabid. Recent sets at Fabric (London) and
Winter Music Conference in Miami only see him further building his following.

Uberzone's mix is one that is sure to bring any room to life. The tracklisting
pretty much speaks for itself with productions by breaks innovators from both
sides of the Atlantic. The huge "Turn It Out" by Meat Katie vs Christian J and
"Soul Makossa" (Afrika Bambataa vs Uberzone) by Manu Dibango sit deservedly
within this list. Tracks by Rennie Pilgrem, BLIM, General Midi and Uberzone
himself also feature to make this an absolutely lethal compilation.

For the latest Y4K mix, Distinctive Breaks invited recent visitor to Australian
shores, who wowed the crowds with his combination of DJ mixing, live drumming
and scratching (courtesy of Davey Dave) - Uberzone - who alongside the likes of
The Crystal Method is responsible for lighting a beacon for West Coast US
breakbeat and electronic music.

First off the mark is a cover track, Uberzone and Afrika Bambaataa do a breaks
cover of Manu Dibangu's Soul Makossa giving it a dancey, electro feel using
deep basslines, electro stabs, a melodic sax part and African tribal chants.
The last time these two teamed up was back in 1998 for the classic
"2kool4skool" and to hear this new effort is a treat.

Elite Force, another recent visitor to Australian shores turns on the tech-funk
for Driving Me Crazy - a more soulful affair featuring a repetitive male vocal
sample and melodic bass line before getting right into General MIDI's (yet
another recent visitor to our shores!) bassline killer remix of Aquasky vs
Masterblaster's Seville.

Uberzone teams up once again with TCR boss Rennie Pilgrem for Fuego, a track
filled with hard hitting synth stabs and electro arpeggios. The final Uberzone
tune on this release is the beat oriented Drunken Monkey combining old
skool/hardcore style beats with tribal percussion and digital scratching.

Turn Me Out by Christian J and Matie has become a breaks anthem lately bringing
the Kathy Brown classic back to life. Rolling bass lines, punchy drum beats and
that vocal sample - "turn me on, turn me out, make me scream, make me shout!"
- sing-a-long breaks galore. Koma & Bones' Take Me Back squeezes in afterwards
featuring the vocals of Robert Owens and appears in a bass fueled remix done by
BLIM, before General MIDI returns once again with his Bass Rokkaz taking the
bass to even darker levels.

Another one of Tasmania's finest exports Andy Page contributes Mr Rush pulling
out the quirky electro samples, bouncy drum patterns and dark basslines before
the mix closes off with Ferocious Mullet's Cakewhole providing a deeper and
more laidback mood to close the CD.

This release is actually quite unusual - a US DJ/producer takes and mixes a
collection of tunes mainly from UK artists who play and produce a sound that
has its origins from the US West Coast to be released internationally from a
UK based label... Oooookaaaaayyyy! It features great tunes, however I just
didn't find this mix to be as fun to listen to as FreQ Nasty's - which spawned
off an anthemic bootleg mix, and got massive crowds rapping along to it! Still
Uberzone's Y4K keeps to Distinctive Breaks' focus of showcasing the latest
breaks and giving breaks fans a taste of the chosen selectah's record box.
