PUBLIUS VERGILIUS MARO (70–19 BCE) , usually called VIRGIL or VERGIL in English, was an ancient Roman poet of the Augustan period.  Already acclaimed in his own lifetime as a classic author, Virgil stood as the most popular Latin poet through late antiquity, the Middle Ages, and early modernity, exerting inestimable influence on all subsequent Western literature.  He composed three of the most famous poems in Latin literature: the ECLOGUES (or Bucolics), the GEORGICS, and the epic AENEID.

Virgil’s earliest major work, the ECLOGUES, consists of ten short pastoral poems modeled on Greek bucolic verse, especially Theocritus.  Set in an idealized rural landscape, they depict shepherds singing of love, poetry, political upheaval, and exile.  While outwardly simple, the poems subtly reflect contemporary Roman realities, including land confiscations following civil war.  The Eclogues established Virgil as a master of poetic voice and intertextual refinement, blending Greek models with distinctly Roman concerns.

His second major work, the GEORGICS, is a didactic poem in four books devoted to agriculture: farming, arboriculture, animal husbandry, and beekeeping.   On the surface a practical guide, the Georgics is in fact a deeply philosophical meditation on labor, nature, order, and human vulnerability.

The AENEID is widely regarded as Virgil's masterpiece and one of the greatest works of Latin literature.  It tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who fled the fall of Troy and travelled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Roman people.  Drawing heavily on Homer, the poem combines epic adventure with Roman history, myth, and moral inquiry.
