Produced by his old accomplice Buddy Cannon, with whom he collaborated on the writing of two songs, First Rose of Spring collects the talent of artists such as Chris Stapleton, Toby Keith and Pete Graves, not to mention another outlaw, Billy Joe Shaver, of which Nelson plays the cover of We Are the Cowboys.

This tasty new album, built essentially on love songs, closes with Yesterday When I Was Young, a cover of Charles Aznavour's famous Hier Encore, which gives the whole a twilight tone, but never painful.

Thanks to his understated, never rough production that juggles violins - when there are any - with precision, his magnificent acoustic guitar parts (played on his trusty Martin N-20 Trigger) and a warmer-than-usual voice, First Rose of Spring stands out from Willie Nelson's many recent publications.
