Lorsque Mark Volman et Howard Kaylan ont quitté The Turtles, ils ont été mêlés à des conflits contractuels qui les ont empêchés de se produire sous leur propre identité. Au début des années 70, le duo se mêle à Frank Zappa en tant que chanteurs, fait une tournée avec le groupe et est crédité pour la sortie du film Frank Zappa - Chunga's Revenge par leur pseudonyme.

Le nom est resté. Ils ont sorti un album éponyme sous le pseudonyme The Phlorescent Leech & Eddie - Le Phlorescent Leech & Eddie, date à laquelle le surnom avait été raccourci pour devenir "Flo (40)" (Phlo) & "Eddie (55)". Un alias par lequel ils continuent à jouer sous - Flo & Eddie.

Un des temps forts de leurs performances avec Zappa a été leur interprétation en direct de «Happy Together» des Turtles (sur The Mothers - Fillmore East - juin 1971), sous la forme de «groupies Fillmore». L'album est sorti comme s'il s'agissait d'un "bootleg", c'est pourquoi le duo est crédité de Volman & Kaylan.
