It’s 1815 and Daniel Connor, an anatomy student out of Edinburgh, arrives in Paris to begin a research assignment at the Jardin des Plantes botanical garden.

On his journey he meets a mysterious woman who intrigues him with talk of “transformism,” the beginnings of evolutionary theory, and steals his papers and coral specimens while he sleeps.

trying to recover his things, he will be swept up into a dangerous love affair and a world of outlaws and revolutionaries.
